Gillingham grew as a result of the railway, and the housing stock reflects this. In the immediate vicinity of the station it is predominantly small to medium size Victorian through to the 1930s, with the odd enclave of quite grand houses: detached 1930s around Gillingham Park; Georgian townhouses towards Brompton.
Gillingham is an excellent commuter town with good rail connections to London Victoria, London Cannon Street, and the new high-speed service to London St Pancras, as well as towards Canterbury and the Kent coast. It has good road connections as well, with the M2 skirting the south of the town, and good road and bus links to Maidstone.
The town is also very well served by sports facilities, with an ice-skating rink, and an athletics track and swimming pool at the new Medway Park. And not forgetting Gillingham Football Club, the only league club in Kent, for those who find spectating more than enough exercise.
There are pockets of new development in Gillingham, one of the most notable and by far the largest being Victory Pier, consisting of contemporary riverside apartments and townhouses complemented by a mix of uses including restaurants, bars, retail, residents' gym, major branded hotel and riverside walks, built near Gillingham Marina, with good road and rail connections.
