If you want a beautiful and unique detached family home, providing the seclusion and security associated with rural living, yet be within easy walking distance of Canterbury West station, a number of excellent schools, the Kent University and the city centre, this stunning property should be top of your list. It is hidden away down a long gravel drive at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, nestling in the midst of 0.343 of an acre of landscaped garden and grounds and accessed via impressive wrought iron remote controlled gates. From the moment you set eyes on the Tudor style black and cream exterior of the house with its lovely wood surround windows, cathedral style upper windows, beautiful yellow roses and gorgeous old wood front door with its stained glass insert, you know it is something really special and once inside the individuality of the house becomes even more apparent. This property was designed and built by the owners in 1986. It is timber framed and incorporates a variety of glorious features giving it great character and charm. This is evident from the moment you walk into the warm and welcoming entrance hall with its Merbau wood flooring, attractive staircase, original wood doors and beams. In fact everywhere you look there are beams, whether they are fascinating structural beams supporting the property or ornate lintels over doorways or fireplaces. These include one over the vast reclaimed brick surround inglenook in the elegant and spacious sitting area with a smaller fireplace in the dining area, while the large open area between the sitting and dining areas features an exposed brick wall. This L shaped living space is ideal for entertaining as there are french doors to the small covered loggia and side patio from the dining area and doors to the vast semi circular terrace where you can enjoy early evening drinks before dinner. Alternatively the living room is just the place to sit round a roaring fire on a cold winter’s night. There is a delightful kitchen/diner room with a large skylight offering additional natural light and bespoke maple units. In addition there is an adjacent utility room that doubles up as an extra kitchen. What the Owner says:
“When we built the house we wanted something special and individual and we have loved living here and bringing up our family over the past 32 years but they are all grown up now and we feel it is time to downsize although we shall undoubtedly miss our home very much. We thoroughly enjoy entertaining which is why we in effect have ‘two’ kitchens and tried to ensure that we could provide everything needed for leisure and pleasure. The swimming pool has been extremely well used over the years and we built the terrace as big as it is so that there is plenty of room for any number of friends and family to enjoy our hospitality. While the lounge and dining room really come into their own over Christmas and the New Year holidays.
“We originally fell in love with the position because we are really tucked away and it is so quiet and tranquil yet we are near to the West Gate at Canterbury and the pubs and restaurants, our children could walk to school or we could stroll along to the station for the high speed train to St Pancras. There is so much to do in the vicinity, whether you want to sail at Fordwich or Whitstable, go to the theatre at the Gulbenkian or the Marlowe, play golf at the Canterbury Golf club or sample some of the wonderful restaurants in the city. At the same time we can enjoy country walks along the ‘Crab and Winkle’ route or relax in our secluded and peaceful garden watching the local wildlife."
