Property DESCRIPTION

This former hotel turned detached home is by far the largest home you will find. The current owners have tastefully remodelled and refurbished the property and have created a stunning and spacious home measuring approx 6400sqft and consisting of four reception rooms, conservatory, open plan kitchen/living area, six bedrooms and five bathrooms which put simply has the real wow factor. The property is minutes away from Strood Town Centre and mainline train station offering high speed links to London as well as access to the A2.History:The Cedars, as the house was known from about 1865 until 1946, was built on the site of a former smock mill. Originally it had garden ground and stabling covering about 2½ acres, now taken up with the Madhuran Court housing estate. The house and grounds were bought in 1924 for £1 800 (c. £100k at 2017 values) by William Dunbar, a man originally from Morayshire, Scotland, who together with his family owned and ran several businesses in Rochester and Strood High Streets. He converted the tower into a studio for his wife Florence, an amateur painter, and for his youngest daughter Evelyn Dunbar ARCA (1906-1960), who was to become a celebrated war artist. The Cedars and its then magnificent garden feature in several of her better-known paintings. By 1946 both William and Florence Dunbar had died, Evelyn, by now Mrs Evelyn Folley, had left, and the remaining siblings decided to put The Cedars on the Market. Rochester Grammar School for Girls has a building and facilities named after Evelyn Dunbar in commemoration of their illustrious former pupil.
