This magnificent six bedroom detached family home is a veritable oasis of serenity and calm yet it is within five minutes’ walk of Canterbury West Station and the city centre. It is hard to believe that such an impressive property, with a stunning garden backing on to the River Stour and not only a double garage but additional parking for several cars, is available so close to everything that Canterbury has to offer. Built to a very high standard in the 1930s it has been tastefully modernised by the owners while still retaining many of its original features, giving the house a delightful character. The first of these delights is the beautiful and welcoming dining area with its beamed ceiling, bay window, central brick chimney stack and double sided fireplace providing a lovely warm ambience for family and friends. Indeed the whole property is designed for both entertainment and family life. The large sitting area with its beams and wood burning stove provide a cosy feel and this is open to an amazing sun room/games area with a wall of windows and doors to the garden as well as a vaulted ceiling, so this whole area is ideal if you want to host a large party. There are also doors out from the sitting area to the canopied loggia where you can enjoy al fresco dining while looking out over the fabulous garden. This includes a vast raised pond with a waterfall and is full of enormous koi carp. There are also outdoor pet enclosures, a bespoke barbecue area, winding paths interspersed with lawns and beds of shrubs, trees and flowers. The well fitted kitchen area includes a range cooker and a breakfast bar. Upstairs there are even more surprises. On the first floor you will find a modern family bathroom and five very good sized bedrooms. Some include wash basins while the master and bedroom 2 have en-suite shower rooms and plenty of wardrobe space. Bedroom 2 and one of the other bedrooms have direct access to the large balcony so people can sunbathe in private or enjoy their breakfast or a night cap in peace and quiet looking out over the garden. On the top floor there is a modern 6th bedroom built around 2000. What the Owner says:
We moved here in 1989 and have thoroughly enjoyed bringing up our family in this lovely home. However they have now all flown the nest and we feel it is time to downsize. We were originally attracted to both the size of the house and character of the house and its proximity to the centre of Canterbury. It meant that we never had to even get a taxi to go out for a meal or the theatre and the children have always been able to walk to school or to see their friends. We are so close to the station that we can be in London in just over an hour ‘door to door’ so it is an excellent base for commuters.
It has been a labour of love over the years to create the garden that was somewhat of a wilderness when we arrived and we were pleased to design the studio upstairs that makes a wonderful spot for an older child looking to have a little independence or it could be used for a nanny or au pair. We have also enjoyed entertaining with family coming at Christmas when the whole house looks stunning when it is decorated or having friends round in the summer to enjoy the great outdoors.
Canterbury is a beautiful and historic city. Whether your interest is historic buildings, eating out at a range of delightful restaurants, visiting theatres or shopping in a variety of high street stores or individual shops, Canterbury has something for everyone. Not to mention the excellent educational facilities available with two universities, further education colleges and both private and state schools.
